A tile roof can make installing a solar panel system difficult. Important to use the right drill bit.
My friend’s solar panel install required delicate foot work. He has a tile roof. Either you need to be a light weight individual or know exactly where to step or you will crack the tiles.
The solar contractor purchased some matching tiles before they started because they knew they would crack tiles during the install.
The solar contractor needed to get the right drill bit too, because if you have the wrong bit and it creates too much vibration for the tile and will crack. The drill is used to create the holes for the roof stanchions (you can just make them out pointing out of the roof in the photo left).

I am doing research on applying “green” principles to our growing roofing company, aimed at the Real Estate Industry. One point I am having trouble with is “certifying” a roof, prior to solar installation, in that, you want a roof to be healthy enough to not need to be torn off or even replaced after you’ve installed solar panels and so there must be some sort of certification process that preceeds the installation…can you direct me to that information online? I am thinking while this is something the boss has not asked about yet, it is something I should bring to his attention!!

Lori,
Thanks for stopping by and good question. To be honest have not sure where to direct you on this one. Hopefully one of the contractors that visit this site will answer your question.
