When building a new home getting the roof pitch and angle is very important. Mary describes what their green architect is dealing with. The video includes examples of current roofs in north Boulder.
3rd video interview with Mary Coonce. There are video of lots of roof lines in north Boulder Colorado.
SolarDave: When designing the house how much thought is given to a large south facing roof - at the best pitch angle for solar panels?
Mary Coonce: A lot actually, that is really what we do to accommodate it. Every lot out here is fairly small. Not one house even though we have 11 different designs - not one of those houses is the same because the layout of the lot and some of the roof lines get changed.
So we are spending a lot of time thinking about we are about to do 23 condos, and we are planning on doing solar on that. What we are trying to work out with that - can we have one whole solar system that one building uses or many some of the other buildings can accommodate solar better than the other building can they go ahead and be all on the same grid - so we are trying to work that out.
That is a little complicated because now we have Xcel Energy involved with different meters, more complicated but we are trying to make it so they can all go under one solar system so it will be a lot more efficient.
