I was curious if green builders were incorporating solar panels in to their designs - not just on roofs - but on awnings.
This is my 6th video interview with Mary Coonce of Porchfront homes.
SolarDave: Do you place solar panels anywhere else besides roofs - such as on awnings?
Mary Coonce: We haven’t done any of that yet. We started many years ago in the building industry doing remodels and we have a house in the historic district (Boulder) in town. That is something I wanted to look in to personally because I think that is kind of interesting way to go.
One of our homeowners here - his house was built in the first phase and he didn’t have the solar on it - he actually works for an energy company. He plans to put awnings on.
SolarDave: That is kind of interesting especially if you don’t have a roof that is facing south - I think the architecture is really interesting. To incorporate awnings should be really easy.
Mary Coonce: What is really cool about solar is it reminds me of the computer industry how it is evolving, same way for the solar industry. Because the solar panels are better. A company in Longmont that came out of CSU - they are making solar panels out of window glass.
I talked to Cary (Hayes) about it and he said they are not there yet. But, the fact they are trying to do it is really great. So the price of a PC in 1984 was $5,000 now it is like $400 - I can foresee that happening in the energy industries - wind power and that kinda thing.
