Sacramento Solar Panel Installers

Video of commercial solar install near Sacramento.

A new solar powered hydrogen fueling station is coming to Sacramento to fill up fuel-cell electric cars. The fueling station creates hydrogen from a large solar panel array 80kW in Sacramento to power fuel-cell electric vehicles.

Sacramento got $200k grant from the Dept of Energy to place solar panels on commercial and residential roof tops. Sacramento has a goal is to produce 40 megawatts of power from renewable energy sources by 2017. I guess this is a bit ironic since Sacramento is the city of trees (don’t shade those panels).

Sunflower Solar

I was doing some solar research and I found this solar install video.

Meteorologist Chris Tomer does a E-Team Series on the Fox network which some how made it’s way on YouTube. Looks like the video was done in Fort Collins Colorado (correction is was done in Denver). Kind of ironic that they did it on a snow day.

The homeowner gave a nice plug to Colorado SunFlower Solar so I am guessing she was really happy with their service and install. She had a lot of nice things to say about Sunflower, such as how they explained everything to her in layman terms including the trees that would block her panels.

I guess there must be many different ways to calculate payback on a solar system, the homeowner said 4 to 5 years which seems a bit short – but again it depends what you add to the calculation. With 18 panels on her roof, the system is probably in the 3 to 4 Kilowatt area, I am going to guess the payback is a bit longer than that. I was surprised to hear her say that the payback might be even less than 4 or 5 years.

REC Solar

I was introduced to REC Solar in the Boulder Colorado area because my friend was getting his solar panel system installed by there Colorado office.

When my friend’s system was finally going in, I went over to his house and took some videos of his install since I am interested in installing one myself some day.

I also got to interview Cary Hayes at REC Solar in a local Costco on camera a few weeks ago and published a bunch of those videos.

I plan on going around to all the local Boulder and Denver contractors and doing videos on who there are and some of their installs so others won’t have to duplicate my research later on.

They did a nice job on my friend’s project.

San Diego Solar Contractors

San Diego is home to the National Solar Conference in May 2008. San Diego is a top solar city to be picked for the national conference.

California has one of the most aggressive mandated goals of 20 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010. Right now there is talk that they will not meet that goal. One sticking point is the Sunrise Powerlink, a $1.3 billion, 150-mile transmission line it has proposed between San Diego and Imperial County.

A very large mirrored dishes solar facility in Imperial County which would be over 300 megawatts is having a hard time materializing.

On the residential solar front, the number of contractors that provide solar installation for homes has grown leaps and bounds in the past few years because of California’s tax credits and refunds program.

Please be patient I am still building the list of all the San Diego solar contractors.

Boulder Solar Panel Installation

I got to speak with Cary Hayes from Rec Solar today on the phone and he mentioned something very interesting.

I believe he said that just a few short years ago Colorado only had about 18 solar installers in the Colorado and now there are over 100.

So when picking a Boulder solar contractor to install your system in the Colorado area you have many more to pick from.

I am sure the state of Colorado rebate program has been responsible for the explosion in contractors in the state.

But it brings up concerns when picking a contractor who just recently started in the business with his buddies. Are you going to get a guy that used to be a CPA installing your system with no experience? If you are, perhaps doing it yourself and following my blog might be an option.

Home Depot is Now Offering Solar Panel Installation

My wife told me she saw a sign up at Home Depot announcing that they now install solar powered systems.

I needed some electrical stuff this weekend so I headed down there to ask about it. Apparently they have a partnership with SunFlower Solar out of Boulder Colorado to serve this Home Depot’s location (I spoke with Pat in the Electrical dept.). I went to the Sunflower web site but didn’t see anything about Home Depot. I gotta think Namaste Solar Electric and other Boulder solar installers are missing the boat as SunFlower gets some good branding in place since they are already aligned with McGuckins Hardware in Boulder.

Home Depot had tried a test program in California on over 200 stores to see if they wanted to do it else where and it looks like it must have been successful because they are expanding it to Colorado.

But perhaps going with Home Depot might not be the best choice however:

“At The Home Depot, we’ve teamed with BP Solar to offer you BP Solar Home Solutions – the best in solar power systems and installation.”

It sounds like Home Depot will limit you on your choice of equipment which might not be a good thing.

On a side note, the Home Depot Store is located in Louisville Colorado which is surrounded by HOA covenant communities which could cause an issue. My town of Superior allows Solar Panels but has some very strict guidelines. More on that later.
