Video: I have a large tree that might shade my future solar panels so I created a 3D model of the tree and roof to see what shadows might happen.
I created a 3D model of part of my house and then imported a tree - after that I turned on the shadows to see if the 35′ foot tree would create shadows on December 21.
The image above is at noon on Dec 21 and as you can see the shadows almost touch the panel mounted low on the roof line.
If you are interested the 3D program is SketchUp and is very easy to use. One thing to keep in mind is the program did not ask where I am located, so the shadows could be off. But since the program was created in Boulder Colorado and I am located a few miles from there - I am guessing I am OK because it matches my other hand sketch closely.
I created the movie below so you can see the shadows in action across the house.
