From an interview with Yukie Nishinaga on why so many vineyards in Napa are going solar: The reason why so vineyards and many small commercial businesses are using solar in California because there are great incentives and rebates available to them.
Up in Napa there are a lot of vineyards and a lot of them produce their own wines so they have a lot of production facilities right there on site, they crush the grapes the ferment it, they have climate controlled within it which demands a lot of air conditioning and there for high electricity bills.
So what solar does is offsets the peak usage of a lot of their electricity needs reduces it and on top of that small businesses have great access to 30% federal tax credit at the end of the year and they still get a state rebate from CSI.
Typically solar systems on wineries typically run 30 kilo watts to over 200 kilo watts. It completely has to do if the winery has the production facilities on site how much space they have to dedicates towards solar at Topless creek they built a beautiful ground mount within the vines of the vineyards so it became a beautiful educational display for people to walk up try some wine and look at the winery.
Up at Sinsky they actually built their first PV system on the main production facility and the 2nd PV system they added system that went all the way around the car port so it just depends on space and where they want to put it.
